Frequently Asked Questions

What is summer band?

Summer band starts in early August and is required for ALL band members. Band members will learn basic marching and music fundamentals, learn the competitive marching show and build lasting friendships.

Are there costs involved in my son/daughter being in band?

Yes. Any competitive marching program will have fees associated with it. We try to keep the fees as low as possible and we are proud to say that we still have some of the lowest student fees in the state. While some programs are requiring participation costs upwards of $1000, we are proud to say that ours is $180. These fees are used for drill-writing, music-arranging, contest entry fees, transportation, food, parties, show-shirts, props, consultants, etc...

There are additional fees if your son/daughter uses a school-owned instrument ($50.00) and if they want to participate in the Spring Trip.

What if we can't afford these fees?

We are flexible and offer payment plans so that these fees are not an immediate financial burden. We do require that a minimum of $90.00 be paid before your son/daughter gets on the bus to their first football game. For more information about payment plans, please contact the band directors.

Why are there so many practices?

It takes a LOT of work in order to put out a quality production of our show! It also takes a lot of time learning to march and play at the same time! UIL rules governs that bands practice a maximum of eight hours a week. The Spring Woods HS Band practices 6 1/2 hours a week in most cases.

My child has a doctors appointment and has to miss a rehearsal, what do I do?

The rehearsal schedule is designed that each student will have one day off a week (the same day) after school.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE schedule all doctor's appointments or any appointment on those days. When learning drill, it is almost impossible to clean the drill and address spacing when there are missing people.

My child was absent from school, will points be taken away if they miss after school rehearsal on those days?

First off, we hope that your son/daughter is feeling better. If a student has an excused absence from school, the band rehearsal after school is also excused.

My child has to work and miss a rehearsal, what do I do?

The directors don't like surprises. Early communication is the key. If it is communicated 24 hours in advance, most likely, as long as it is not abused, it can be an excused absence. But remember, ALL absences from band rehearsals as long as you are in school that same day, must be made up. See page 14 of the band handbook for specific information.

I think that my child should have more money in their account than what is showing. What should I do?

Email me at Donald.Zurbriggen@springbranchisd.com and I'll look into it.

I want to give my child food at the football game, when can I do that?

You can't. The students are given plenty of water and a sports drink at the game and are given time to get food before we leave for the game. It is unfair to everybody if one person is eating and others are not. Eating while in uniform also could create stains.

Should my child be practicing at home?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no way that the directors alone can create a successful band. It is also up to the student AND their parents. What normally works best is to set up a 30 minute minimum block of time that is for BAND and only BAND five days a week. For example:

TJ's Weekly Home Schedule:
MONDAY-THURSDAY and SATURDAY
6pm-7pm Dinner
7pm-7:30pm TJ Practices his Trumpet
7:30pm-9:30pm Homework
9:30pm-11:30pm TV

Will my child get water during band practice?

Students will have A LOT of water breaks and they are required to bring large jugs of water to each and every outdoor rehearsal. The last thing we want is your child to become dehydrated.
