Classroom Rules

Our CLASSROOM rules are simple and based on RESPECT......

WE SEE A BAND WHERE..

Each student is RESPECTFUL to everyone in the room - in how they talk, in how they interact, in how they treat property

Each student is DEDICATED enough to be in their seats, ready to play when the bell rings or when the rehearsal begins

Each student is RESPONSIBLE enough to take care of the instruments that are being used..both personal and school-owned. This includes proper storage of instrument in assigned, locked band lockers

Each student has enough PRIDE in the band hall to not permit food, drinks (during the Spring), or gum and not to treat the band hall as a personal locker

Each student contributes to the PRODUCTIVITY of each rehearsal by staying attentive and silent throughout the duration of the rehearsal

Each student meets DEADLINES each and every time. This includes due dates for forms, money, etc

Each student is PREPARED for each and every rehearsal and takes the proper time to prepare for playing tests. Being prepared means you know your individual part through consistent PRACTICE and having all supplies needed to play your instrument

Each student knows how to COMMUNICATE with the directors about rehearsal conflicts prior to the day of the rehearsal. Realize that every missed rehearsal deeply hurts the progress of the entire band. All missed rehearsals will be made up by two 30 minute practices in a band practice room within five days of the missed rehearsal

Each student has COMMON SENSE enough to realize your actions in public during a function reflect upon entire band

Guidelines, Policies and Rules Relating to Football Games/ Performances

• Pick up an itinerary for the event. They are available in the band hall at the beginning of the week or available online at our website Sunday evening. Adhere to all times on the itinerary.

• Thoroughly check and organize materials needed for the game. This will include black band shoes, plain black socks, show shirt, thin shorts to wear under your uniform, flip folder, lyre, and instrument. Any item missing may result in not marching the halftime show.

• Uniforms will be issued before the game. Students are requested to get in orderly lines and be cooperative
with the uniform chairperson.

• Prior to all marching performances there will be a band inspection. Inspection will include the existence of a flip folder with all music, music lyre (if needed), clean black band shoes, plain black socks, all parts of the uniform, instrument and reeds.

• You will sign up for buses at the end of summer band and will ride that same bus for the duration of marching
season. You are expected to cooperate with all chaperones and bus drivers at ALL times. While on the bus, you MUST remain seated at all times. Do NOT extend hands, arms or legs outside the bus.

• Upon arriving at a football game, promptly exit the bus (not through the back), get your instrument assembled and quickly find your position in the stretching block ready to march in the stadium. You may NOT play your instrument. Directors will tell you before each game whether woodwinds will take their cases or leave them on the bus. Hat boxes and uniform bags will always stay on the bus as long as there is no chance of bad weather.

• The band will be placed in rows in the stadium and is expected to stay in rows until after halftime. During the game we want you to have fun, but also realize you are representing Spring Woods High School and you should act accordingly at all times.

• Only band personnel may sit in the band area. Band alumni may come down to sit only after the halftime performance.

• For your protection, students do not go to the bathroom without permission from Mr. Zurbriggen or Mr. Munger. Please do your best to take care of bathroom needs BEFORE we leave for the stadium. You must go to the bathroom in pairs. This is not a time to socialize. If this is abused, you will only be allowed to go to the bathrooms with an adult chaperone.

• You are NOT permitted to eat food from the concession stands. Water will be provided during the game.

• During the game BE READY TO PLAY AT ALL TIMES. Only play what is on the printed page. Watch the Drum Majors while playing, not the game. We will stop playing when there is an injured player.

• Once we leave the stands for the halftime show, it is ALL BUSINESS. We will warm up as a band. When on the field, there is absolutely no talking. We watch the other bands performance with your feet together and without talking. This shows them the respect they deserve.

• We will play the fight song from the track when our team comes out after halftime. After that, the band may enter the stands.

• After halftime, the directors will give specific instructions on whether or not you may take off your jacket.
We are a band that is uniform, so therefore if jackets come off, EVERYBODY’S jacket comes off.

• After halftime, the loading crew will load all front ensemble instruments in the truck.

• Early in the 3rd Quarter, the band may do spirit stick only if EVERY section is represented. Please make sure you stay close to your instruments because we could play at ANY time. “Hey Band” will only be done at the start of the 4th quarter. The SWHS Band will initiate it ONLY at Tully Stadium and only when we are HOME, not visitors. The leadership team and the head drum major are allowed to participate.

• Close to the end of the game, you will be asked to pass all trash to the isles so we can leave the stadium clean.

• At the end of the game, we will play the School Song (win or lose). We will exit the stadium by rows. Battery Percussion may march across the field only at Tully Stadium and only when we are HOME, not visitors.

• While walking to the buses, you may NOT play your instrument. If your instrument goes on the truck, make sure you quickly put it away so the loading crew can get their job done.

• Loading crew will have no longer than 10 minutes to load the truck, once the directors get to the truck.

• If you are a non-driving band member, before we leave the stadium, you must call home and tell your parents/guardian that you are on your way back to school and to pick you up in 15 minutes. Do NOT WAIT TO CALL WHEN WE GET TO SCHOOL.

• Same bus rules apply coming home

• Uniforms must be hung up before you return them. Line the pant seams up with the creases lined up. Hang the jacket with front collar facing the name on the hanger and zip up jacket.

• EVERY BAND MEMBER HELPS UNLOAD THE EQUIPMENT TRUCK upon arrival at the school.

• In accordance with district policy, and to be fair to all involved, it is important that band students have transportation home arranged for them a maximum of 30 minutes after the event (see end time on the itinerary) For any child not picked up within this time, SBISD police will be called to pick up the student for transport to the SBISD police office.
