There is obviously tons to fix, but I'm confident that with hard work and the determination to carry on the tradition, we will be where we need to be in no time. We are a month out from the Band Extravaganza, so we need to move quickly to once again wow the audience with our performance. We can do it! All performances are now posted on the website. Go to HOME, FIELD PRODUCTIONS, and you will see it. Study it and see what you PERSONALLY could do to make the show a first division. Everybody still should have practice CDs. Practice at home on any area of the show that gives you trouble. As soon as the music is committed by memory, you can really begin to think about how you LOOK. If you were out on that field by YOURSELF, would you earn the highest rating from a judge? Be personally responsible for how the show looks! REHEARSAL MAKE UPS This week will be the first week students will be making up rehearsals they missed the previous week. If you missed a rehearsal last week, you are required to sign up for two 30 minute practice times outside of the school day in order to get credit for the rehearsal. If it was an excused absence and you complete your two 30 minute practices this week, you will receive a 100 in the grade book for the rehearsal you missed. If it was an unexcused absence and you complete your two 30 minute practices this week, you will receive an 80 in the grade book. Please see the band handbook for more details. GRADES!!! Please, please, please, make sure you are keeping up with your grades. Eligibility for UIL Marching Contest is based off of the first 6 weeks PROGRESS REPORT!! You get no second chance to regain eligibility. It is IMPERATIVE that you pass ALL of your classes or you cannot march with us at the Band Extravaganza and UIL Marching Contest. All of the hard work we have done would be thrown out the window. If you are struggling in a class, TELL US so we can get you the necessary help NOW to ensure your success on that progress report. THANK YOU CHAPERONES!! Thanks so much to all of you for volunteering your time with the SWHS Band!! The turnout has great and WE COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU. Again, THANK YOU! DRUMLINE LIVE at Jones Hall There is an opportunity for the Fine Arts Department to go see DRUMLINE LIVE! at Jones Hall on October 26th. This is an optional event for students and is a musical based off of the movie Drumline. Tickets are $15.00. Money AND permission forms are due no later than September 15, 2010. Students would be missing approximately 1/2 a day of school. CHARMS Please take time to log into charmsoffice.com to review your account. How do you log onto charms? Go to links on TheSpringWoodsHSBand.org and click on Charms. Go to Parent/Student Login and type in the school code which is: Springwoodshsband. Press enter. Under student password, enter their school ID number and press enter. There will be some of you who have issues with the log-in because on the information sheet that was passed out to your son/daughter, they left their ID number blank. If that is the case, you will need to contact me by email, and I'll be happy to correct it so that you will be able to login properly. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are such an important supplement to your son/daughter's success as a musician. Applications are available in the band hall. We do have scholarship money available to students who would normally not be able to afford the cost. Most lessons would occur at Spring Woods HS with the Spring Branch ISD private lesson staff. The more students taking, the better our band will be! LESSONS ARE SET TO BEGIN THIS WEEK!!! Get those applications in! INSTRUMENT INSURANCE If your son/daughter is using a school owned instrument, the fee is $50.00. This will cover the insurance and maintenance of the instrument for the entire year. This is required. If the $50.00 is not paid, and the instrument is damaged or becomes out of working order, you are responsible to pay the bill in full out of pocket. (Repairs range from $50-$200 depending on the extent of the repair). Your son/daughter will be getting a form this week that must be filled out and returned this week. **COLORADO TRIP CONTRACTS I have extended the deadline for the Colorado trip contracts. If you have not turned your contract in, get it in before THIS WEDNESDAY, September 8th. Once contracts are turned in, you will need to follow the payment schedule listed in the contract. Your first payment of $200 is coming up on Monday, October 4th. If your son/daughter has earned $200 or more PROFIT from fundraisers, then the first payment is not necessary. If they have LESS than $200 in their account, you must pay the amount necessary in order for their account to reach the $200.00 mark. How do you check this? See how to log-in to CHARMS above. COMPETITIVE SHOW SPOTS VS ALTERNATE SPOTS Congratulations to those who made it into the competitive show! If you ended up as an alternate, you are still part of the halftime shows AND you have the opportunity to work your way in the competitive show by improvement in marching and playing, being at every rehearsal, and showing you have a great attitude. At anytime, your section leader or drum major will help you before or after band. Anybody who is in the competitive show that establishes a lack of excellence over time will at anytime be replaced with an alternate who is deserving. If you are an alternate, practice marching and playing at home by putting on your CD! FACEBOOK! We now how a Facebook page! If you haven't already joined The Official Spring Woods HS Band Page, please join! This is another way to keep the busy band schedule in check. Parents AND students are welcome to join. Mr. Zurbriggen
